Whiteboard Doctor, Youtube, November 3, 2020
In this video we will discuss the medication Melatonin. This is a medication that is used throughout the word as an over the counter sleep aid and in the hospital for insomnia, assistance with sedation, and more. Earlier on in the pandemic there was discussion on wether this medication may be efficacious in COVID-19 as in vitro and animal studies it has been shown to have anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant, and immunomodulation properties that have not been as well teased out in clinical studies. In this video, we will discuss these different properties and then dive into a trial that looked at Melatonin use in severe COVID-19. Interestingly, they found a decreased hazard ratio for a negative outcome in those that received Melatonin. What does this really mean? Check out the video for all the details!
